Signal

What can be learned from the growth story of the Signal app?

Let’s understand where Signal stands right now. As of January 2021, the app has more than 105 million total downloads and in the past few weeks, it has remained at the top of various app stores.

Here’s another interesting fact – The app grew from 10 million to over 50 million installations on Google Play between 12 and 14 January. The reason? Whatsapp’s new privacy policy update along with Elon Musk’s public backing of the app.

That’s why people have been calling this an ‘Overnight Success’ for the messaging app.

However, that’s not the case. Actually, it’s never the case. Keep this in mind – There is no such thing as an overnight success.

What seems like an overnight success is actually built through years and years of concentrated efforts. That has been the case with Signal too.

It was in 2014 that this app was first launched. To receive this moment of fame, the app creators had to put in 7 years of effort.

And when the opportunity came (the issues with the WhatsApp privacy policy), it was time for Signal to shine. No one could have predicted Signal to someday rival the dominance of WhatsApp. But it’s happening right now.

That’s what happens in life too. You need to be prepared for an opportunity even when it’s hardly visible to you. As they say often, success happens when ability meets opportunity.

So keep working on your abilities. You never know when an opportunity might knock on your door.
