How to overcome procrastination?

This is a problem that probably all of us face and is something that requires a much larger canvas than this small post.

However, I’ll try my best to talk about a few things that work for me. I hope they work for you as well.

First of all, we must remember that it’s a difficult phase that we are going through right now and it’s okay to not be productive all the time. No need to be too harsh on yourself amidst a pandemic.

As for how to tackle procrastination, these three strategies work for me.

1. Don’t rely on motivation to complete a task. Let motivation follow action not the other way around. FORCE yourself to take the first step. This builds momentum. You don’t have to run 5km, just start with 100m. Running 100m every day is much better than not running at all.

2. Start your day with the hardest task first. In the morning, you have maximum energy. Use it to complete your most important task and you’ll have a relaxing day.

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

Mark Twain

3. Create a to-do list on paper and strike through each task as you complete them during the day. Visuals are extremely powerful. When you see your to-do list getting completed one by one, it gives you a sense of accomplishment.

One last thing. Don’t stress too much over lost time. Feeling guilty for not doing enough won’t bring back any time. Instead, focus on what can be done in the time that you are left with.
